Many renters do not release that they are entering into an actual legal contract with a landlord. When something goes wrong, the relationship can be complicated. Each state handles landlord/tenant disagreements differently. What is a renter to do?
Steps to Resolving a Dispute with your landlord:
- Read your lease. Your lease is your legal agreement. Be sure that both of you have signed the agreement and that there is no gap in your understanding of each party’s obligation.
- Schedule a meeting, either on the phone or in person, to discuss your grievances. Rental properties are an investment to landlords and they most likely do not want to lose you as a renter. Take genuine time to listen and hope for a peaceful resolution.
- Document in the meeting with a follow-up email. It is important to have a paper trail in legal disputes.
- If the problem persists:
- Know your rights. The NOLO Legal Encyclopedia has an excellent summary of Landlord and Tenant Rights.
- For apartments, contact your state’s chapter of the “Apartment Association.”
- For legal situations, or if your safety is at risk, file a complaint with your county housing administration and the Federal Housing Administration.
Another Option… just move.
Although moving is painful, a Rental Selector agent can make the process as easy as possible. We’re happy to help and if your relationship with your landlord has gone poorly, they may be willing to even let you end your lease early.
