Leaving California For Texas and other states

The above quote from a recent article in the LA TIMES illustrates an important trend that affects renters. As the population of large coastal cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego, and Portland booms to become more global, industrious, and expensive, some choose to leave the Coastal US for a different way of life.

If you are planning to move from California to Texas or a nearby less-expensive state, the move can be a lot to manage. These areas are different culturally and economically. The housing market is no exception.

See below for 5 tips on finding a new apartment or home when leaving California or other states and moving to cheaper parts of the United States:

  • Decide whether you want more space or the familiarity of an urban center. Most properties in Texas and the Southern United States will not offer
  • Think about school districts. The price of housing typically varies in Texas-based upon the access and prestige of neighboring schools.
  • Look for new properties. Texas, (especially Frisco and Austin) has experienced radical growth in the last 10 years. New apartment communities will have the best specials in order to entice renters for long-term contracts.
  • Rehearse your commute. Use an online tool to understand what your commute will be prior to signing a lease.
  • Remember, Texas and other states do not typically enjoy the “outdoor lifestyle” as much as Coastal America due to inclement weather. Make sure to find a property that includes indoor amenities that you can use 365 days a year.
